Edmond was named for one of the railway officials. It was first recognized as a watering and coaling station when the Santa Fe Railway was extended into the Territory in 1887. It served as a shipping point for cattle and as a concentration point for supplies bound for trading posts on the Kickapoo and Iowa reservations. In the Run of April 22, 1889, the townsite was homesteaded.
The beauty and magnificence of the scenery and its natural surroundings is evident and clear. Homes are built on deep meadow where there are tall trees and beautiful flowers everywhere. Edmond is a trading center for the surrounding farms, has several small factories, and a towering grain elevator, and is rapidly developing a near-by oil field.
The city of Edmond has established many programs to ensure that the beautiful place will not be compromised with the city’s fast and growing community. One of the programs that they created is the Neighborwoods Tree Program.
The goal of this program is to maintain and preserve a healthy and safe urban forest. This is done by trimming and removing hazardous trees, as well as planting new trees. With the help of the city's Urban Forestry Office, more than 100 hazardous trees have been trimmed or removed from the Edmond CDBG target area. These dangerous trees not only pose a serious safety threat to people and homes, but if they are diseased, the diseases can be spread to other trees throughout the neighborhood. Yes, Edmond is dedicated in maintaining healthy and safe urban forest but they are also concern with their resident’s welfare. Given the value and high cost of maintaining a healthy urban forest, this program has been set aside to assist property owners who cannot afford the tree trimming and / or removal.
